About the Role
SurvWest, LLC is seeking an experienced SUE Technician III (Designator) The SUE Tech III serves as a Senior designator to support our Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) operations from our Englewood, Colorado office. This is a senior field role responsible for advanced utility designation, Quality Level A coordination, crew responsibility, and high-quality field data collection in support of SUE deliverables prepared in accordance with ASCE 38-22.
The SUE Technician III serves as senior designator on complex SUE assignments, as a senior field technician and technical resource, performing complex utility designation, coordinating test hole activities, collecting exposed utility data, and representing SurvWest professionally in the field.
Our SUE team plays a critical role in high-visibility infrastructure projects across Colorado, where accuracy, professionalism, and setting the standard in the field truly matter. This role is best suited for professionals who take ownership of their work, communicate clearly, and coach crews to integrate operational standards.
Required Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent
Minimum 3 years of experience as a SUE Designator
5–7 years of experience as a SUE Field Technician I or II
Familiarity with Subsurface Utility Engineering practices and ASCE 38-22
Excellent driving record
Ability to pass background check and drug screening
Ability to obtain and maintain security clearance required for Denver International Airport (DEN) badging
Willingness to work overtime and weekends as needed
Ability to lift, carry, and operate equipment weighing up to 50 lbs
Ability to work in all weather conditions
Willingness to travel for extended periods (up to approximately 12 consecutive days)
Strong leadership skills, attention to detail, and a “can-do” attitude
Preferred Qualifications
Field survey experience
Familiarity with DOT SUE and survey standards
Prior experience using Bluebeam
Experience coordinating survey activities in support of SUE work
Primary Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Utility Designation & Field Operations
Perform advanced subsurface utility designation in accordance with ASCE 38-22 Quality Levels.
Designate both wet and dry utilities, including but not limited to:
Water
Sanitary Sewer (including sanitary dips)
Storm Sewer (including storm dips)
Gas
Electric (distribution and transmission)
Communications (fiber, copper, coax)
Street lighting
Traffic signal infrastructure
Unknown or abandoned utilities
Select and apply appropriate geophysical prospecting methods for complex underground utility systems.
Operate and interpret data from multi-frequency pipe and cable locators, ground penetrating radar (GPR), sondes, rodders, and related geophysical equipment.
Interpret utility records, design plans, and record drawings to support accurate field designation.
Use, obtain, and interpret survey control points and records in the field.
Collect and deliver daily surveyed utility points and related field data in accordance with project requirements and SurvWest standards.
Quality Level A Coordination & Data Collection
Coordinate hydrovac and traffic control subcontractors to support Quality Level A test hole operations in areas where SurvWest field crews are working.
Mark proposed test hole locations and verify dig locations prior to excavation by subcontractors.
Observe test hole excavations and perform detailed data collection of exposed utilities, including size, material, depth, orientation, and condition.
Communicate QL-A findings clearly to project managers and office staff to support accurate deliverables.
Senior Field Responsibility & Technical Guidance
Assist with crew coordination, provide technical guidance, and mentorship to junior technicians.
Coordinate SUE field activities with survey staff, project managers, and office personnel.
Represent SurvWest professionally when interacting with clients, contractors, utility owners, and the public.
Documentation & Data Management
Complete daily field documentation, including Daily Reports and Field Sketches, using Bluebeam via project Sessions.
Ensure field documentation is complete, accurate, and submitted in accordance with project requirements.
Verify that daily surveyed point data and related deliverables are uploaded, organized, and ready for office processing.
Safety & Field Standards
Participate in on-site safety meetings and maintain compliance with SurvWest safety requirements.
Ensure work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company standards and project specifications.
