About the Role

SurvWest, LLC is seeking a Staff Engineer (Engineer-in-Training or Professional Engineer) to serve as a technical production lead and primary quality-control reviewer for our Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) services. This role focuses on drafting oversight, QA/QC review, and deliverable readiness prior to submission to the signing Professional Engineer, in accordance with ASCE 38-22, client requirements, and SurvWest standards. 


This position plays a critical role in ensuring that all SUE base files and deliverables are complete, accurate, and defensible before final engineering review and seal.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field 

Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required, or Professional Engineer (PE) license 

• EIT candidates must be within approximately 6 months of PE eligibility 

• Working knowledge of Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) in accordance with ASCE 38-22 

• Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, and/or OpenRoads 

• Strong understanding of plan production, utility mapping, and engineering documentation 

• Excellent attention to detail and ability to identify technical issues prior to final review 

• Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with DOTs and municipal agencies

  • Familiarity with utility coordination processes and documentation

  • Experience performing QA/QC reviews of engineering deliverables

  • Experience working closely with licensed engineers in a production environment

  • Familiarity with integrating survey and field data into utility mapping

Primary Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


Technical Production & Drafting Oversight

  • Perform and oversee CAD drafting (AutoCAD, MicroStation, OpenRoads) for SUE plan sheets, exhibits, and base files.

  • Serve as the primary technical reviewer ensuring SUE CAD files are complete, accurate, and ready for engineer review.

  • Ensure all deliverables comply with SurvWest CAD standards, client requirements, and DOT / municipal standards.

  • Coordinate with CAD staff to resolve drafting inconsistencies, errors, and omissions.


QA/QC & Engineering Review

  • Conduct detailed QA/QC reviews of SUE deliverables, including Quality Level D through Quality Level A plans, utility basemaps, test hole exhibits, and utility reports.

  • Verify consistency between field data, utility records, survey control, and final deliverables.

  • Identify technical risks, conflicts, and discrepancies prior to submission to the signing engineer.

  • Maintain QA/QC checklists and documentation for project records.


SUE & Utility Engineering Support

  • Analyze and correlate utility records with field designations, test hole data, and survey information.

  • Review utility plans and construction documents to identify conflicts and design constraints.

  • Support utility coordination efforts by reviewing conflict matrices, utility exhibits, and clearance documentation.

  • Assist project managers with technical input for scope development, fee estimates, and change orders.

  • Ensure all SUE work products comply with ASCE 38-22 and client-specific requirements.


Coordination & Communication

  • Act as a technical liaison between field crews, CAD staff, project managers, and licensed engineers.

  • Communicate clearly regarding deliverable status, technical issues, and resolution strategies.

  • Participate in internal project meetings and, when needed, external coordination meetings.


Professional Development & Support

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior CAD technicians and engineers.

  • Assist in refining internal standards, workflows, and best practices.

  • Perform site visits as necessary to verify field conditions and support technical evaluations.

  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of project delivery and company growth.
